No statue of Liberty, Big Ben or Christ the Redeemer. Sweden has something else: Allemansrätten, the freedom to roam. This a principle, , protected by the law, that gives all people the right to roam free in nature. You can set up your tent in a forest, pick berries and mushrooms from the ground – all completely free of charge.
This is my favorite part of an artistic residency in Southern Sweden called "Arna - Art and Nature": to document the spirit of Allemansrätten in the Skäne region, also known as "Avian Kingom".
At first sight, the vast lowlands looks deserted, with few houses and small farms popping here and there after hours of walk. Its residents work in the nearby cities, Lund and Malmo, that are about 15 to 30 minutes by car each. Therefore, there is no one around, except for small groves with mushrooms and birds. Means of transport? Your legs, that will take to walks of at least 15 km per day, when you don't know whether you're stepping into public of private land. It doesn't matter after all. At Avian Kingdom you can walk in peace, hearing the sound of the wind, smelling the scent of the trees and the fresh breeze that comes from the forests.
